Day 1: Addis Ababa → Semera → Allobabad → Semera
● Arrival in Semera:
You will start your journey with a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, the capital of the Afar Region. After arriving at Semera Airport, you will be greeted by your local guide and travel team.
● Drive from Semera to Allobabad:
After a quick briefing, you’ll drive to Allobabad, a small village located approximately 80 kilometers from Semera. The drive takes about 2-3 hours, passing through the desert terrain of the Afar Region, where you’ll encounter vast plains, salt flats, and the stunning landscape of the Danakil Depression.
● Visit Allobabad:
Upon arrival in Allobabad, you’ll explore the area and interact with the local Afar people. This community is known for their traditional lifestyle in one of the most inhospitable places on Earth. The region is also home to volcanic rocks and salt deposits, and the local culture offers a glimpse into the survival strategies in such extreme conditions.
● Return to Semera:
After your visit to Allobabad, you will drive back to Semera, taking about 2-3 hours. Upon arrival in Semera, you will check into your hotel for the night.
● Overnight in Semera:
Relax and enjoy a comfortable stay at your hotel. You’ll have dinner at the hotel or at a local restaurant in Semera.
Day 2: Semera → Hamedila → Dalol → Camping in Hamedila
● Drive from Semera to Hamedila via Afdera:
On the second day, after an early breakfast, you’ll start your journey from Semera to Hamedila, traveling via Afdera. The drive is 4-5 hours and takes you across the stark desert landscapes of the Danakil Depression, passing through the salt flats and dry, rugged terrain of the Afar Region.
● Visit the Salt Flats Near Hamedila:
As you approach Hamedila, you’ll visit the salt flats in the area, one of the most stunning features of the Danakil Depression. The vast expanse of salt creates a surreal landscape, and the sunset over the flats offers a spectacular photographic opportunity.
● Camping in Hamedila:
After exploring the salt flats and taking in the breathtaking views, you’ll set up camp in Hamedila for the night. The campsite will be equipped with all the necessary camping gear, including tents, sleeping bags, and mats.
● Dinner at the Hamedila Camp:
Enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by your chef at the camp. Relax around the campfire, stargaze, and enjoy the quiet of the desert.
● Overnight Camping:
Spend the night at Hamedila Camp, surrounded by the unique desert environment.
Day 3: Dalol → Erta Ale
● Early Morning Visit to Dalol:
Wake up early to explore the Dalol area, which is famous for its vibrant sulfur springs, acid pools, and salt formations. The otherworldly colors of Dalol — ranging from yellow to red, green, and white — are created by the mineral deposits and geothermal activity in the region. Dalol is considered one of the hottest places on Earth.
● Explore the Sulfur Pools and Salt Canyons:
You will take a guided tour of the sulfur springs, salt canyons, and vibrant acid pools around Dalol. The landscape here looks like something from another planet, making it one of the most unique spots in the world for travelers and photographers.
● Drive to Erta Ale:
After spending the morning at Dalol, you will begin the 3-4 hour drive to Erta Ale, an active volcano. The landscape en route to Erta Ale becomes more rugged and barren, offering a glimpse of the region’s geothermal activity.
● Hike to the Erta Ale Crater:
Upon arrival at the base of Erta Ale, you will begin your moderate hike up to the summit. The hike typically takes around 2-3 hours. Erta Ale is one of the few volcanoes in the world with an active lava lake, and it is an unforgettable experience to witness molten lava bubbling and flowing in real-time.
● Camping Near the Crater:
After reaching the summit, you will set up camp near Erta Ale’s lava lake, where you can observe the glowing lava and enjoy the surreal atmosphere. This is a truly unique experience, as there are only a few places in the world where you can camp near such an active volcano.
● Dinner at the Erta Ale Camp:
Enjoy a warm dinner around the camp, with the fiery glow of the lava lake providing an eerie yet awe-inspiring backdrop.
● Overnight Camping:
Spend the night camping at the Erta Ale Camp, with the volcanic landscape and the sound of bubbling lava as the perfect setting.
Day 4: Erta Ale → Afdera → Semera → Addis Ababa
● Early Morning Visit to Erta Ale:
Rise early to witness the lava lake at its most active. The early morning hours often provide the best light for photography, as the molten lava contrasts beautifully with the desert surroundings.
● Descend from Erta Ale:
After exploring the volcano, you will begin the descent from the summit. The hike down typically takes 2-3 hours.
● Drive to Afdera:
After reaching the base of Erta Ale, you will drive to Afdera for a refreshing swim in the saltwater lake. This lake is highly saline, allowing for an easy floating experience.
● Swim and Relax at Afdera Lake:
Relax and enjoy a refreshing swim in Afdera Lake. The high salinity makes it easy to float, and it’s a great way to cool down after the volcanic hike.
● Drive to Semera:
After enjoying the lake, you will drive back to Semera, which takes approximately 4–5 hours. This scenic drive will give you one last opportunity to admire the stark beauty of the Danakil Depression.
● Flight from Semera to Addis Ababa:
You will reach Semera by the late afternoon and have time to rest before catching your flight back to Addis Ababa at 5:25 PM.
● End of the Tour:
The tour concludes with your flight back to Addis Ababa.
